We believe self-esteem in children to be the most important factor in promoting childhood, adolescent and adult resilience.
A child that has a solid self-esteem is armed like a soldier at war to fight against the negative influences of life such as peer pressure, drugs, relationship issues and self worth issues ( plus a million more ).
How do we build strong self- esteem’s from a young age? Listen to them! From infancy, we are listening and building self-esteem in our kids when we adhere to their every need. It tells them that they are important enough for us to provide. This continues throughout childhood but as parents, we have to adapt to their ever changing world. In infancy, it’s hunger, rocking and nappy changing but in adolescent-hood, it’s listening and being a sound board.
Lastly, accept your child’s negative emotions. It’s difficult- WE KNOW- but if their negative emotions are seen as ‘bad’ we teach kids to suppress their emotions, and we do not want that. We want them to accept negativity, feel it and learn skills to work through it by feeling comfortable enough to open up to a caregiver.
