Promoting Diversity in Childhood

Did you know that inequality is very often a learned issue meaning that we learn certain things that influence our beliefs and behaviours.

Inequality is present in many forms; today we will only be looking at gender inequality, race inequality, disability and mental health inequality.

Children view the world from a white and western perspective. The flashcards and books that are used in schools are generally white raced people ( very often male) with two arms and two legs. This is called institutional inequality; where an institution such as a school incorporates historical social practices as the supreme ideology through gender based subordinate roles, race supremacy and full body ability supremacy.

To put it simple terms: children read books and learn with flashcards that depict white characters with full body functions as the idealized image. Children internalize this imagery and any variation is seen as ‘out of place’ thus creating racism, gender based inequality and body disability based judgement.

Ways to influence diversity and aid in raising children who see all genders, races and body functions as equal:

– Diverse dolls, figurines & barbies
– Diverse books & flashcards
– Diverse movies and cartoons
– Diverse social groups, religious groups, educational institutions & work places.
