The Impact of School Closures on Children

The Corona Virus pandemic has hit us all with a bang, affecting almost every sphere of the world but most importantly, our children.

There are endless questions running through our minds as we consider what the future holds. How will this effect the economy? How will this affect our social lives? How will school closures affect our children’s education?

UNICEF reports that while the mortality rate in child cases of Corona Virus are low, it’s the impact on their mental well-being that is notable. Children are missing social interactions with their peers now that schools have been closed and socializing has been minimized. In a study conducted in The United Kingdom, the influence of social interactions on children’s confidence levels from 6 pre-schools were analysed. The results found that there was a positive correlation with social interactions and elevated self esteem levels. Along with these findings, it was evident that confidence levels and social interaction was widely connected to cognitive development too.

It is our social responsibility to minimize face-to-face social interactions and therefore, socializing needs to be done via online platforms. We are spoilt for choice on this front with some of the most widely used social media platforms available to us such as Skype, WhatsApp and FaceTime, only to name a few.

Keeping children busy at home during this time in addition to maintaining socialization through the internet and social media are advised by professionals but getting outside and moving are right there at the top of that list too. It is important for children to keep physically active during minimized socialization in order to feel good. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states the importance of physical activity for kids as a key prevention of anxiety levels among other diseases such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. They advise that children between the ages of 6 to 17 should participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day.
